In the past we made these cookies for our store, and our customers absolutely loved them! One of the best things about these homemade dog treats is that by following the directions below, they will have a much longer shelf life than most "homemade" dog treats. As a matter of fact, we never had even one cookie go bad. Of course, that could also be owed to the fact that they sold as fast as we could make them! But honestly, they will last for a month, or more, if you get them dried out completely.
We worked really hard on these recipes to create a crunchy, healthy, delicious dog treat for our own dogs, and now we would like to share our recipes and secrets with you so that you can make your own treats! The recipe below is one of several that we will be posting in the coming months. All of these recipes share 3 key instructions that must be followed for the recipe to be successful, 1. Oat flour. No other flour will work. 2. Drying. The cookies must be left in a warm oven overnight to thoroughly dry. 3. Size consistency. Be sure to roll your dough to 1/4" thickness - too thick and the cookies will not dry all the way through. Okay, with that in mind, here's the first recipe:
Peanut Butter & Banana Dog Treats
Ingredients:
2 ½ cups oat flour
½ cup warm water
2 eggs
3 Tbs. smooth peanut butter
1 small ripe banana, smashed up with a fork
Topping: ¾ cup rolled oats 2 eggs, beaten
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In mixing bowl, add water and egg, beat vigorously with a whisk until frothy. Add peanut butter and banana, stir until smooth. Add flour and stir until well blended.
Rest dough in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Remove dough from fridge and add 3 quick shots of hot water from faucet to help warm the dough. Stir well. Add a little more flour if too soupy. Turn out on floured surface and knead dough until it becomes a well formed, non-sticky ball; add more flour as needed.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter and arrange cookies onto a cookie sheet without the edges overlapping.
Brush cookies with egg wash then sprinkle with rolled oats, evenly.
Bake for 25 minutes, then turn the oven off, leaving the oven light on. Leave the treats in the warm oven overnight.
Store treats in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place. We hope your dogs enjoy these as much as we enjoyed creating them!
